This course will cover references used throughout the Natus RetCam Education Series. In addition, there will be a review of resources available for further research and education.
Importance of Eye Imaging Digital eye imaging has become very important in early detection of ocular diseases. There have been huge advances in regards to digital eye imaging in the 20th & 21st centuries and continues to evolve. Digital imaging not only affords the ability for early disease detection, it is non-invasive, offers high quality…
What is Zika Syndrome? Congenital Zika Syndrome (CZS) is a group of birth defects associated with Zika infection during pregnancy. Zika is a virus. If a woman should get infected with Zika during pregnancy, the virus can pass through the placenta to the baby.
A cataract is any cloudiness or opacity of the natural lens of the eye, which is normally crystal clear. There are many types of cataracts. Some cataracts are small and do not interfere with vision. Other cataracts are large and cause severe vision loss.
The cornea is the dome-shaped transparent anterior part of the eyeball. The cornea acts like the window that allows light to enter the eye. It also focuses the light on the retina that has the photoreceptors.
Retinoblastoma, also known as RB, is an intraocular (occurring in the eye) malignant tumor (cancer).
90% of RB patients are under 4 years of age and 30% of cases are bilateral (involving both eyes).
Retinopathy of Prematurity – ROP, is a vascular proliferative disease only present in premature newborns. The absence of vessels in the premature retina, leads to retinal ischemia (lack of blood supply/oxygen) which triggers vascular endothelia growth factor (VEGF).
An early eye exam is important in helping identify possible neonatal congenital eye disease. Utilizing digital imaging creates an opportunity for early detection and thus intervention/treatment to help in supporting the best visual outcomes.
Understanding of the disease entity ROP, who is at risk, timing of the disease, disease progression, the use of Digital imaging for accurate documentation and then subsequent treatment protocols are all necessary factors in helping prevent blindness in these patients.
Understanding the disease entity OcularToxoplasmosis and use of digital imaging for detection and diagnosis may help aid in better visual outcomes for these patients.
Understanding the disease entity Zika and use of digital imaging for detection and diagnosis may help aid in better visual outcomes for these patients.
Understanding the disease entity Retinoblastoma (RB) and the ability to recognize signs of the diseasewill help children have a better chance of survival if RB is caught early and treated timely.
Understanding of the disease entity ROP, who is at risk, timing of the disease, disease progression, and importance of the screening examination, documentation and treatment are all necessary factors in helping prevent blindness in these patients.
Understanding of the disease ROP, associated risk factors, screening criteria, classifications (zones, stages) examination and treatments are essential in helping preserve the vision of these small infants.
